I think it’s pretty safe to state that everybody has read reviews of something at one time or another, and that a large number of people have allowed them to influence their decision at least once, and probably a lot more often than that! The trouble is that a large number of reviews are not true reviews, but by people being paid to write them, or even the vendor themselves, or a competitor writing a bad review! Plus of course everybody has different tastes. Whilst I do read reviews, I bear that in mind, but also like to make up my own mind. Consequently, even if a place has a bad review I want to try it at least once. But also, in the matter of restaurants, it might be that they were simply having a bad day (it happens!). I raved about one place, saying it was the best steak I had had for a long time. Went there again with friends and that night it wasn’t so good. Will I go again? Yes!
The Aberdeen Steak House in Caleta de Fuste is one place that has had far more bad reviews than good on Facebook, with seemingly 90% saying how awful it was, and to avoid at all cost, many saying not just the food but poor service too. On TripAdviser they have a 3.5 star rating, with more people saying they liked it than those on Facebook.
So last night we thought we’d try them. We went early (for us!) and got there at just 6.30pm. At that time there were a few in, but by 7pm it was very busy. The table next to us was reserved, and we noticed a couple of people who were known by the staff, so they obviously get repeat business!
The staff were friendly and we were quickly given a menu and ordered our drinks at the same time. Admittedly the drinks did take a fair time to come, but they were busy making cocktails, so we understood. Ian had a beer and I had a glass of red wine. The wine wasn’t the best one I’ve had, but nor was it the worst! They certainly gave you a large glass full to the rim!
Well, obviously food presentation isn’t their finest point LOL! Ian’s mixed grill came on a sizzling plate and was huge, with all the meat piled up high! He had ribs, chicken, pork chop, bacon, sausage and steak. Although the steak was a little bit too well done for him, he thoroughly enjoyed it, and said that the pork chop (which was huge and very thick) was the best he’d ever had! Personally, I don’t know how he managed to eat it all!!
My Canarian style chicken came on a cold plate, but the food was good and hot. I’m not quite sure what was ‘Canarian style’ about it though! The chicken came on a skewer (I had taken it off the skewer before remembering to take a photo!!) with peppers. The sauce was a sweet and sour, which could have been very tasty but it was just a bit too much vinegar for my taste. So, whilst perhaps not my best choice off the menu, it was okay and I’ve certainly had worse!
So, would we go there again? Certainly not if we wanted something special, but for a quick bite, yes we would. Have the bad reviews damaged their business? I would say it was obvious that they had not, as they place was certainly busy last night, and usually is whenever we have been passed there.
